Technical trainings are vital tools for effectively conveying complex concepts. However, the lack of visuals in such trainings can make it difficult to capture the audience’s attention. To address this issue, we transformed a case study detailing the tragic boiler explosion that occurred on the Norbe VIII drilling vessel in 2017 into a comic-style video. Here’s how we achieved this step by step: Transforming Technical Training into an Motion Graphic Experience

1. Idea Development and Planning

We brainstormed to make a technical subject more impactful and engaging. Due to the specific nature of the topic, we had limited resources. To create a different and engaging presentation style with the information we had, the idea of producing comic-style content emerged. This approach offered both an educational and visually appealing method. Although we could have used 3D characters, we didn’t have enough time. We also wanted to create a different style rather than using flat illustrated characters. The main reason for heavily utilizing AI in this content was the technical nature of the content, which only included text and internal visuals of the vessel, limiting our resources. Therefore, we couldn’t have offered the same experience to the user by only showing a few visuals.

2. Character and Background Creation

AI Usage

Character Creation: I created the central characters of the story from scratch using Microsoft Bing AI image generator. Any inconsistent characters were edited in Photoshop to maintain consistency

Edited character image created with DALL·E, demonstrating the use of AI in visual enhancement and transformation.

Background Images: To make the incident scene photos compatible with the comic aesthetic, we transformed them using AI. We altered real visuals to fit the comic style.

Background image converted from real-life photo to comic-style art using AI technology for transform comic-style.

3. Sound and Effects

Sound Effects and AI Voiceover

Sound Effects: To emphasize the dramatic nature of the incident and capture the audience’s attention, we added tension sounds, alarms, explosion noises, and an ambulance helicopter sound to the video.

Visual Effects: We incorporated visual effects to support the on-screen visuals, reflect the comic style, and enhance the explosion effects in the story, thereby deepening the learning experience.

AI Voiceover: To make the story more engaging, we used AI voiceover with a tone reminiscent of video games.

4. Video Editing

Editing with After Effects

Harmony and Dynamism: We used After Effects to ensure all elements were harmonized. We added camera movements and transitions to make the flow of the video more dynamic. We made small adjustments with on-screen texts and frames to get closer to the comic style.

Transforming technical training into a motion graphic, the Norbe VIII boiler explosion case study was turned into a comic-style video, edited in After Effects with added music and sound effects, providing a dynamic and engaging learning experience.

Final Touches: After evaluating the final version of the video, we made the necessary final adjustments to create a compelling and attention-grabbing video where all elements worked in harmony.

Conclusion

By following these steps, we took a significant step towards making technical trainings more engaging and impactful. By presenting the Norbe VIII boiler explosion case study in a comic style, we succeeded in making complex technical topics more understandable and captivating. This innovative approach expanded the boundaries of technical training, providing an unforgettable learning experience for the audience.

The Norbe VIII boiler explosion case study example demonstrates how AI can be a powerful tool in education and communication, creating added value. Such innovative approaches can be used to convey complex information to broader audiences and create more effective learning experiences.
